Kids Read Comics 2011 Recap

Kids Read Comics

I just got back from the Kids Read Comics event in Chelsea, Michigan. It was super fun! I’ve attended professional conferences and mingled with other artists and authors before, but this was my first event where I got to meet readers, fans, and kids! There’s no greater thrill for someone like me than seeing someone get excited about your art or walk away with a fistful of comics. Thanks to everyone who stopped by my table, shook my hand, chatted with me, and let me draw stuff for you.

And a special THANK YOU to the KRC organizers and Jerzy Drozd for rounding up all the terrific artists and putting together such a fantastic event.

Kids Read Comics 2011

Kidsreadcomics

This weekend, I will be heading to Chelsea, Michigan to attend an event called Kids Read Comics. It is a free comic convention especially for kids and teens. Not only can you meet tons of great artists and comic creators, but there are also lots of other activities and workshops going on throughout the weekend. And did I mention it’s FREE?! Yes, free.

I will be there in the artist alley selling books and art, and will be participating in some of the activities. I would love to meet you if you can make it. I will even draw you something!

There are also a TON of other great artists attending, including Raina Telgemeier (Smile, The Baby-Sitters Club) and Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy).

Kids Read Comics is June 18-19 at the Chelsea District Library in Chelsea, Michigan (near Ann Arbor). You can go to their website for all the details, directions, and full list of artists attending. http://kidsreadcomics.org

NESCBWI 2011 Workshop

I will be teaching a workshop this year at the New England SCBWI spring conference, “Celebrating Milestones”. It will take place May 13-15 in Fitchburg MA. All the info you need about the conference is here: http://www.nescbwi.org/conferences/spring/

I am collaborating on one of the TWO Illustrator Academies being offered this year. The other faculty teaching with me will be writer/illustrator John Lechner (Sticky Burr), my rep Nicole Tugeau (tugeau2.com), and designer Kerry Martin (Clarion). Our workshop is going to be about web presence and digital publishing and will feature website portfolio critiques for the attendees. There will also be some kind of assignment to complete beforehand. Read more info here: http://www.nescbwi.org/2011/02/illustrators-academy-at-nescbw.php

If you would like to attend, I highly recommend registering as soon as possible in order to get the workshops that you would like. This is a very popular conference and space runs out fast.

Hope to see you there!

NESCBWI 2010 Recap

Momentsofchange

I just came back from spending the weekend in Fitchburg, MA for the annual New England Regional SCBWI conference. As always, it was an inspiring and educational trip.

The picture at the top of this article is the poster I drew for the competition this year. There were lots of great entries and some talented artists and friends garnered some awards. Congrats!

I got to meet and re-meet many cool artists. Some of them were folks I already knew from Twitter, and it was great to speak to them face to face for the first time. Be sure to check out their work and their websites. They are all swell people!

I hope I’m not forgetting anyone. If I did, I apologize – there were sooo many people there!

I also attended workshops taught by Matt Phelan (“Writing the Graphic Novel”), Jennifer Morris (“Photoshop Techniques for Illustrators”), and Frank Dormer (“Thinking Before You Draw”). All of them were excellent and very educational. I also had brief run-ins with some talented writers like Mitali Perkins and Cynthia Lord. They are very kind and gracious ladies.

This was also a special conference for me because I taught my own workshop for the first time. It was called “10 Ways Artists Can Improve Their Online Presence”. I mostly talked about online marketing, and my love of Twitter. :) (Seriously, if you’re not on Twitter yet, what are you waiting for?) I hope to make another blog post soon about some of the specific topics and tips I talked about. Thank you to everyone who showed up and chatted with me at the workshop!

Now, with the conference over, it’s time to take all the advice, critiques, and inspiration and start revamping my artwork.

If you’ve never attended a conference like this, I highly recommend it. The NESCBWI conference in particular is always very good. I’m looking forward to next year. If you come, look for me and say hi.
