Making and Publishing a Children’s Book, Part 3

I haven’t posted an update about my “Once Upon a Time” picture book in a few weeks. Never fear – I AM making progress. Here is the photo evidence:

My desk is covered with sheets of paper, from this project, my webcomic, and my freelance work. Busy busy! I almost have the entire book roughed out. Then, I’m going to head into refining the drawings. I have the roughs in red colored pencil because I am going to draw right over them with a regular pencil and clean them up in Photoshop. After that, it’s just a matter of painting them!

With this series of posts, I am realizing that it is very hard to do a “making of” without giving too much of the story away. But you may notice above that I managed to put in a sneak peek at a new character I haven’t shown before. ;)

Making and Publishing a Children’s Book, Part 1

Ouat01

I’ve been writing, ranting, and debating about books, art, self-publishing, and digital publishing non-stop since launching The Illustrated Section a few weeks ago. It’s time to stop talking and start CREATING.

How I Write Comics

Mstf Thumbsample

I received an email recently asking how I “write” my comics. That’s an interesting question because seeing as My Sister, the Freak is my first comic ever, I am still learning how to do this myself.

However, I thought I’d write this blog post anyway just to give you all a sneak peek into the way I work and write. It’s been a big learning experience for me, and I’m sure you can learn from it too if you’re trying to tackle your own graphic novel.

In-Progress

Stuart Little WIP

The BFG WIP

I’ve started a new personal project to create a series of illustrations based on some of my favorite kid lit books. These are a couple that I have started based on E.B. White’s Stuart Little and Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

Though I’m pleased with my progress so far, I am not entirely happy yet, so I’m looking for feedback from all you artists out there (non-artists are welcome too!). Please send any critiques and suggestions my way. I need your help to make these illustrations stellar.
