NESCBWI 2009
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the New England Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators conference in Nashua, NH. The above image is the painting I created for the poster contest. It won SECOND PLACE in the published category. I was extremely pleased. The first place winner was friend and fellow Tugeau 2 artist Kathy Weller (see her poster here), so I was not sad to lose the top prize.
I met and re-met with lots of cool picture book people (like Robert Squier, Andy J. Smith, Kathy Weller, Anne Jewett, Kim Jacobs, and Jim Hill) and got a nice, informative portfolio critique.
Also got to meet author Cynthia Lord, the keynote speaker, who is very funny and sweet in person and was nice enough to sign a book for me. Illustrator Floyd Cooper also gave a keynote and demonstrated his cool oil liftout technique.
This year, I also attended the illustrator’s intensive workshop that focused on the graphic novel. The faculty included illustrators Anne Sibley O’Brien and Gareth Hinds, and art directors Chad Beckerman from Abrams (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), and Phil Falco from Scholastic (Bone). They provided a great crash course about the creation and marketing of graphic novels.
Lots of info to absorb, and lots of inspiration to take in. Thanks to all the volunteers and organizers who make this such a great event each year.
Ustream Update: Free Giveaways and Sketch Discounts
Show and Schedule
I have now established a schedule of broadcasting EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING AT 10 AM EST. Each show lasts about an hour. Come, watch, hang out, and chat. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/dani-draws
The show includes a mix of both digital techniques in Photoshop and Illustrator, and traditional painting. These traditional sketches are a part of my Daily Doodle goal that I have mentioned previously. They are mostly pencil sketches and watercolor stuff.
I have two major announcements concerning this traditional work:
Free Doodle Giveaways
Once a week, I am going to give away one sketch that I produce on the show. All you have to do is show up and watch.
Rules and Guidelines
- One sketch will be given away EVERY FRIDAY.
- You need to be in the chat room to participate. This means you must be watching via the Ustream channel page, not on DaniDraws.com or other website where the feed is embedded. You will not need to register with Ustream.
- At the end of the show, one user from the chat room will be randomly picked to receive a free sketch. User must be present to win, otherwise another name will be drawn.
- Winners will be required to provide a real name, email address, and mailing address via private message at the end of the show. This info will not be used for anything other than the purpose of the contest.
Hope to see you there, and good luck!
Happy Easter!
These are some watercolor sketches I made this morning on my Ustream channel. Here’s the video:
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Painting a Spot Illustration, Part 2: Using Clipping Masks

This is the second part in a series of tutorials. You can read part one here.
When creating a spot illustration, I often create the overall vignette shape first, before I add any other colors or details. To do this, I make a clipping mask layer.
Also check out one of my older posts, Using Masks to Create a Spot Illustration, which reviews some similar methods and ideas I will use here.
Daily Doodles – March 2009
Here are some of my Daily Doodles from the month of March. You can view the rest of them on my website here. Originals are for sale for $20 each.
A few of these were drawn live via my Ustream channel. Drop by if you would like to chat and ask questions as I draw and paint in real time. I broadcast every morning at 10 AM EST. You can also find archived videos of past shows on my Ustream profile.
