This is a recent painting I did for fun. It is based on Mr. Tumnus from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I liked experimenting with the simple composition, subtle background, and limited color palette. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Hi -
I like this very much. I like the verticals of the trees and lampost offset slightly. I like the wavy horizontals of the wispy air moving across the frame, mimicking the curly crossbar-thingy on the post. And, I like how Mr. Tumnus brings in a dynamic diagonal (and a great, apprehensive expression).
My one thought is that I feel like there should be “something” more in the upper left. NOT an actual “thing” or another tree. But, perhaps an element like pulling the darker tones from the edge in toward the lampost a bit more – limiting the reach of the lamplight and adding visual weight and more atmospheric drama (to go with that of the figure).
I don’t know – that’s maybe a little picky. I still think it’s a wonderful painting.
This is a very nice illustration. The character, the mutted colors, the wind all work really well with the mood of the illustration. My only thought is that the snow and wind don’t seem to affect the character too much (only the scarf). Maybe a little snow on the books or the hair would make him look like he is really in the middle of the snow storm. I am really being picky. I think it’s wonderful work!
I really love this!
I actually cam across your portfolio on childrensillustrators.com the other day!
