this was very helpful to me! I just started drawing and I'm still testing different ways of doing so. I think the line drawing in illustrator is easy and it's helpful that it uses vectores (so you can change the size without problems) But still I think I'm only going to use Photoshop CS5 in the future, cause I don't like using 1000 programs.

Why do you use Illustrator for the line drawing?

Hi John. Adobe Illustrator is completely different than Adobe Photoshop. I explain a little about the differences at the beginning of the article here: http://danidraws.com/2007/08/10/the-complete-digital-comic-part-2-inking-in-illustrator/

In a word, no you can't paint and shade in Illustrator like you can in Photoshop. Although Illustrator can be used for making comics for certain styles or parts of the process (sometimes I ink line drawings in Illustrator, for example), most comic artists use Photoshop for the uses you are describing. There is the full pro version of Photoshop, or the much cheaper Photoshop Elements, which is probably what your son was working with.

hi dani, your site is great: adobe told me the thing we wanted for my (very great drawing) son was Illustrator cs5. we got it, but he can't do the shaded paintings he used to do on our Dell computers bundled starter photoshop. he sketches and inks by hand then scans. Am i right? was the bundled photoshop what he really needed? is the illustrator at all useful for him? (or just for computer graphic things, not old-fashioned hand-drawn comics?)
thanks

You saved me! I and other colleagues are trying to draw a comic inspired in our work place and it's hard when you're only used to draw classical portraits with classical methods. Thank you very much!
